At left, the lockers, painted on closet doors, and brick in a boys room look 3D and real. Below, you see a countryside view out the "window." Trompe l'oeil fools the eye.
Trompe L'Oeil
Trompe L'Oeil is French for "deceive the eye." It is a painting technique that creates such a strong illusion of reality that the viewer at first is in doubt as to whether the image is real or not. Some of the 3D effects include: walls that look like brick, windows with a garden view, and "fireplaces" that look 3D and like they have real depth.
The "fireplace," below and right, looks so real that only touching the "tiled" area (that the arrows point to) reveal that it is the trompe l'oeil technique. The only things "real" are the stone mantel and 3 blocks it is sitting on. The real-looking tiled inset area and block extensions give it a 3D look.
This hand painted ornate design on the left, painted around the doors to the right, has realistic, three- dimensional look to it.
