The "Torn Paper" technique requires hand painted pieces of heavy paper, often a faux finish with 3 colors, that are arranged on the walls, then sealed.  This gives the walls a lot of texture and real look, like actual leather or marble.
These two dining rooms each have a wall done with faux finishes on torn paper.  Notice how the faux colors in the torn paper are picked up from colors found in the rooms.
